What is Lot Number?

A lot number (or Auction ID) is the unique identifier assigned to each vehicle at the time it is entered into an auction. It is distinct from the vehicle's VIN and is specific to that individual auction event. The lot number is used by auction staff to track the vehicle from check-in and inspection through its run position in the lane and into post-sale documentation and title processing.

Why Lot Number Matters

Lot numbers (or Auction IDs) are the operational language of the auction. When communicating with auction staff about a specific vehicle, whether to check on a condition report, dispute a sale, or request arbitration, referencing the lot number gets you to the right vehicle faster than any other identifier. On digital platforms, lot numbers are also used to save and track vehicles of interest before the auction begins.
