Title Absent

What is Title Absent?

Title absent is an auction designation indicating that the physical certificate of title for the vehicle is not in the seller's possession at the time of sale. The vehicle can still be purchased, but the buyer takes delivery knowing that the title will be provided within a specified window. Title absent situations arise for a variety of reasons: the seller is processing a payoff on a lien, the title is in transit from a prior sale, or there is an administrative delay in the titling process.

Why Title Absent Matters

Title absent purchases can tie up capital and delay a dealer's ability to retail the vehicle. Until the title arrives, the car cannot be legally transferred to a retail buyer in most states, meaning it may sit on the lot. Dealers should factor the potential delay into their bid price and work with auction platforms that have a clear, reliable process for title delivery.
