Marketplace: What is a Guaranteed Sale?

A Guaranteed Sale is an auction launched with a $0 reserve and a guaranteed sale price that we commit to in advance.

For each True-Up period, if the total sale price of the seller’s Guaranteed Sales is less than their total guaranteed price, we pay the seller the difference.

Every seller can launch Guaranteed Sales, and each sale is assessed a success fee to cover our costs.

‍

Guaranteed price

The seller can request a guaranteed price for a vehicle in My ACV. We usually respond with an offer within 1 hour, and the seller can accept or decline it. We calculate the guaranteed price using current and historical market data.

‍

Schedule

After accepting a guaranteed price, the seller chooses when the Guaranteed Sale launches. There are two options:

  • With "Recommended Launch Times", we launch the vehicle at the time we expect will sell best. Some vehicles launch on the next Sale Day.
  • With "Select a Time Window", the seller picks a time window, and the vehicle launches within it.

Time windows are available Monday through Thursday from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM ET, and on Saturday from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM ET. My ACV shows each window in the seller's local time. Within a window, vehicles launch in the order we receive them.

Every Guaranteed Sale runs for 2 hours.

‍

True-Ups

We group Guaranteed Sales into three True-Up periods per month, based on the day each sale launches:

  • The 1st through the 10th.
  • The 11th through the 20th.
  • The 21st through the end of the month.

At the end of each True-Up period, we compare the total guaranteed price of that period's Guaranteed Sales to their total sale price.

If the total sale price is less than the total guaranteed price, we pay the seller the difference on the business day after the True-Up period ends. Otherwise, we don't make a True-Up payment.

Since True-Ups compare totals, a single vehicle selling below its guaranteed price doesn't ensure a payment.

Whether or not we make a True-Up payment, the seller always receives the proceeds from their sales according to our normal payment rules. The seller can track payments on the Billing page.

Examples

Example 1
The seller launches three Guaranteed Sales between the 1st and the 10th:

  • Vehicle 1 is guaranteed for $10,000 and sells for $9,000.
  • Vehicle 2 is guaranteed for $15,000 and sells for $16,000.
  • Vehicle 3 is guaranteed for $20,000 and sells for $18,000.

The total guaranteed price is $45,000. The total sale price is $43,000. Since the total sale price is less than the total guaranteed price, we pay the $2,000 difference on the business day after the 10th.

Example 2
The seller launches three Guaranteed Sales between the 1st and the 10th:

  • Vehicle 1 is guaranteed for $10,000 and sells for $9,000.
  • Vehicle 2 is guaranteed for $15,000 and sells for $18,000.
  • Vehicle 3 is guaranteed for $20,000 and sells for $23,000.

The total guaranteed price is $45,000. The total sale price is $50,000. Since the total sale price is more than the total guaranteed price, we don't pay the seller, even though Vehicle 1 sold below its guaranteed price.
