Late Title Notice: What happens after I submit a request?

Once we've confirmed the buyer qualifies for Late Title Notice, we'll notify the buyer and seller via email. For your convenience, each email has information about what happens next and how to proceed.

Final deadline

We know timing is critical for your business. To ensure a fair, transparent, and smooth process for everyone involved, both buyers and sellers have until the final deadline to submit their required evidence or title. This is described in more detail below.

Deadline calculation

The final deadline is always at 5:00pm EST. For consistency, the day depends on when the Late Title Notice was accepted:

  • Before 5:00pm EST: the deadline is in 2 business days.
  • After 5:00pm EST: the deadline is in 3 business days.

The table at the bottom of our title policy can help you determine your final deadline.

Note: In exceptional circumstances, like natural disasters, we may be forced to extend the deadline. We'll use our discretion to make sure the new deadline is fair and transparent for the seller and the buyer.

Seller's obligations

The seller must deliver a title to ACV before the final deadline. What happens next depends on the status of the title.

If the title is transferable in the buyer's state, the sale will stay together. We'll mail the title to the buyer within 2 business days.

If the title is transferable in the seller's state but not in the buyer's, the final deadline may be extended to resolve the transferability issue.

If the title is not transferable, the deal will be canceled.

Buyer's obligations

The buyer must tell us where the vehicle is located. If the address is not registered with ACV, the vehicle will need to be moved to a registered lot.

The buyer must also prove that the vehicle is in the same condition and has been driven less than 300 miles since the time of sale. We'll need clear photos of:

  • The VIN plate from the dashboard or the door jamb.
  • The odometer.
  • All four sides of the vehicle.

The VIN and odometer should be easy to read, and the full exterior should be visible.

We'll also need a video of the vehicle with the engine running. You'll need to walk around the entire vehicle while recording.

The images and video are due before the final deadline.

If the vehicle is not in the same condition, or it's been driven 300 miles or more, the request will be closed and the sale will stay together.

Possible Resolutions

Sale stays together

The sale will stay together if:

  • The seller delivers a transferable title before the final deadline OR
  • The buyer does not meet their obligations as described above.
Sale is cancelled

The sale will be cancelled if:

  • The seller doesn't deliver a transferable title before the final deadline AND
  • The buyer meets their obligations as described above.

If the sale is canceled, we’ll quickly reimburse the buyer for the sale price, buy fee, and ACV transportation costs (processed within 2–3 business days). Please note that while we cover core transaction fees, individual expenses like storage, floor plan fees, or reconditioning aren't eligible for reimbursement.

The vehicle will be moved from the buyer's lot in 7-10 calendar days. The seller can optionally let the buyer re-sell the vehicle from its current location. In that case, we're happy to facilitate the re-sale.

Please ensure the vehicle is safely stored until transport arrives and accessible for pickup during business hours (or a mutually convenient time).
