Once we approve a buyer's Late Title Notice (LTN) request, we notify the buyer and the seller via email.
The buyer and the seller have until the deadline to meet their obligations. The deadline is set based on when we approve the LTN request. If we approve the request:
For example, if we approve a request on a Monday morning, the deadline is Wednesday. If we approve a request on a Thursday after 5:00 PM ET, the deadline is Tuesday.
Regardless of the day, the deadline is always at 5:00 PM ET.
In exceptional circumstances, such as a natural disaster, we may extend the deadline. If the deadline is extended, we notify the buyer and the seller.
The seller must deliver the vehicle's title to us by the deadline. The title must be transferable in the buyer's state.
If the title arrives by the deadline and is transferable in the buyer's state
The sale stays together and we mail the title to the buyer.
If the title arrives by the deadline but is transferable only in the seller's state
We set a new deadline so the seller can make the title transferable in the buyer's state. The buyer and the seller have until the new deadline to meet their obligations. We do not extend the deadline a second time.
If the title doesn't arrive by the deadline, or isn't transferable in either state
If the buyer has met their obligations, they can unwind the sale. If the buyer hasn't met their obligations, the sale stays together.
We check the following requirements when the buyer submits the request. All of these must still be met at the deadline, or the buyer cannot unwind the sale through the LTN process. The deadline is explained in the "Deadline" section above.
The vehicle must be at an address registered to the buyer's account
The vehicle must be in the same condition as it was at the time of sale
The vehicle must not have new damage, repairs, or modifications since the time of sale. All accessories that were included in the sale must be present.
The vehicle must have been driven fewer than 300 miles since the time of sale
We determine the miles driven by reading the photo of the odometer that the buyer submits. If the odometer has decreased since the time of sale, we review the discrepancy on a case-by-case basis.
By the deadline, the buyer must also submit:
The video must be taken in daylight or similar lighting with the vehicle in full view. It must be clear enough to show dents, scratches, scuffs, and other imperfections on the body.
If we need more information, we ask the buyer for additional photos.
The buyer must submit the evidence via the Late Title Notice Request Submission Form.
If the buyer unwinds the sale, we reimburse them only for the sale price, buy fee, and transportation costs. We do not reimburse for storage, floor plan, reconditioning, or other fees.
The buyer is responsible for damage to or theft of the vehicle while it's in their possession.
If the buyer agrees to keep the vehicle at its current location, the seller can re-list it from there. In that case, we re-inspect the vehicle and help the seller create a new listing.
Otherwise, the seller must pick up the vehicle within ten calendar days. The day after the buyer unwinds the sale is day one.
The buyer must allow pickup during standard business hours. The buyer and the seller can also agree to a different time.
